Red Cross Activities - Response to Cholera

As you know the Miss PNG Quest is a key event the PNG Red Cross hold to raise much needed funds to help them in their mission of building resilient communities in PNG and assisting those who are most vulnerable in our community. The PNG Red Cross began their response to the Cholera outbreak in PNG in October 2009 reaching more than 300,000 people directly and more than 2.4 million indirectly in 13 provinces. Key activities the PNG Red Cross has been involved in over the last two weeks in Port Moresby in relation to this outbreak are:

  • Conducted training of more than 80 community volunteers in health hygiene promotion from Hanua bada, Elevala, Gabi and Nine Mile
  • Door to door health hygiene awareness conducted by volunteers has reached more than 5000 people in these communities.
  • Conducted training for 8 teachers from schools in affected communities such as St Pauls Primary, St Michaels Primary, Gerehu Primary, Bavaroku Primary, Koki Community School and Badihagwa Secondary School.
  • Red Cross volunteers have also distributed more than 3000 copies of IEC materials to people in the community.

Red Cross volunteers are conducting field assessments in Papa, Lealea and Mirigini and doing door-to-door health hygiene promotion with people in these communities. On Sunday Red Cross volunteers will be working with numerous Churches in affected communities doing health hygiene promotion.
